How Would You Like to Compete With a Royal Wedding?

Spring brides all over Britain have been thrown for a loop by the announcement of the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. Once the April 29, 2011 date was set, ordinary women who had already been planning their weddings for the last weekend of April suddenly realized that their wedding would definitely be playing second fiddle to the grand event. What's an ordinary bride to do when she comes to find out that a royal wedding will be upstaging her big day?

While there is something kind of neat about sharing a wedding anniversary with a royal couple, there are also a lot of headaches associated with it. Brides who had previously selected the April 2011 wedding date which was chosen by Prince William and Kate Middleton are facing an uphill battle to keep their wedding in the forefront of anyone's mind for that special date. After all, the royal wedding will be a national holiday in England - how many of other women can say that about their wedding dates? The reality is that many of the wedding guests may be wishing that they were watching the royal wedding, when they are attending the one to which they were invited. For that matter, the bride herself may be interested in seeing the royal wedding on television!
So what is an ordinary bride to do when she realizes that her wedding will be in competition with the wedding of the year? One option is to change the wedding date. That is not as crazy as it sounds, especially for brides who were planning to get married anywhere remotely near Westminster Abbey or on any of the streets in the vicinity. Remember the legions of fans who lined the route which Lady Diana Spencer's carriage traveled to take her to her wedding to Prince Charles? Surely that kind of scene will be repeated when Kate Middleton makes her approach to her wedding site in her custom bridal gown and royal jewelry, with all of the accompanying security and traffic snarls which you would expect. The ordinary bride who is getting married on April 29, 2011 may well find that just getting to her own wedding is a major struggle.
Of course, not every bride will be able to switch her wedding date, especially if deposits have already been made on the venue and vendors, so there will be plenty of women who share the royal wedding date. In that case, there are essentially two options: to either ignore the fact that there is another, more famous, wedding taking place at the same time, or to really embrace the royal wedding and to celebrate Kate and Prince William's marriage along with your own. Show a film of Kate and Prince William's vows at your wedding reception. Name the reception tables after famous places in the royal couple's life (St. Andrews, Kenya, Westminster Abbey, etc.). Rather than trying to ignore the elephant in the room, embrace it.
Brides who wish to keep the focus on their own weddings despite the shared date with the royal wedding would do well to plan an event in a very different style. Competing with any royal wedding head to head in terms of style is an impossibility for most regular folks, so don't even try! No matter how fabulous your wedding gown and custom bridal jewelry, they will not be instantly copied around the globe. No matter how happy the bride and groom are, their radiant faces will not be put on commemorate plates or postage stamps. So instead of attempting to put together a celebration with a grand style, go a different direction. Host an ultra-modern cocktail wedding in an art gallery or throw a picnic reception on a lawn out in the country. And of course, take heart that despite all the excitement of the royal wedding taking place on the same day as your own wedding, your family and friends will still be just as happy for you.
Finding the whole process of weddings and all the planning that goes into one fascinating, Laura writes about many of the considerations that brides have to deal with. St. Pauls Cathedral Snubbed by the Royals

If St Paul’s Cathedral had feelings, it might be feeling confused, jealous even. The reason: the cathedral was snubbed as the venue for the April 29th wedding-of-the-century between Prince William and Kate Middleton. Westminster Abbey won that honor.
According to rumor, enlisting St Paul’s would have troubled Prince William, raising the spectre of the 1981 St Paul’s Cathedral wedding between Prince Charles and Diana.
Irrespective of whether the rumor is true, St Paul’s looks set just to play a cameo royal wedding role, popping up on the procession route. To make it up to St Paul’s, this week we will give the domed, radiant landmark the attention it merits.
St Paul’s is surprisingly deep – a past arena for dramatic events reaching back into Britain’s feisty, murky history. The facts suggest that, if you understand St Paul’s character, you have a handle on the whole country.

10    Things You Didn't Know About St Paul's Cathedral
    1.  The Whispering Gallery is St Paul's best-known attraction. Climb 259 steps into the lower part of the dome and, if you whisper on one side of the gallery, someone can hear it on the other side.
    2.        The fourth building – ‘Old St. Paul’s’ – was founded by William the Conqueror after the Norman Conquest. It suffered fire damage in 1087, and again in 1136, setting the builders back. People must have wondered if the cathedral would ever be finished.
    3.       The cathedral was finally completed 200 years later, only to fall into disrepair then be stripped during Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries.
    4. In 1561, cementing the suspicion that the cathedral was jinxed, a lightning strike zapped the spire.
    5.       James I undertook major renovations, but these were halted during the English Civil War. During Oliver Cromwell's civil war rule – 'the Commonwealth' – Parliamentarian yobs inflicted acute damage on the building’s fabric. Windows, statues, carvings and the nave roof were smashed up. The Parliamentary army used the nave to stable their horses and later rented the porch of the cathedral to small businesses.
    6. In 1666, further tribulation came when the Great Fire of London reduced St Paul’s to ash.
    7.      Rebuilding the cathedral came into the hands of virtuoso architect Christopher Wren. His first idea – a straight replacement – got the thumbs-down treatment. His second idea was to build a cathedral in the shape of a Greek cross. His third, successful idea was accepted in 1675 and completed in 1710, according to the cathedral's website
    8. Wren’s masterpiece boasts the second-largest dome in Europe (after St. Peter’s in Rome).
    9.      Today’s St. Paul’s is actually the fifth religious building on the site. The very first was made out of wood, and burnt down in 675 AD. The second was sacked by the Vikings in 962 and swapped with a third, sturdier stone building.
    10. The crypt is the largest in Europe and hosts memorials of some of the country's greatest men including the tombs of the Duke of Wellington, Admiral Nelson and Sir Christopher Wren.
Wren’s epitaph famously says: "If you seek his monument look around you."

      Location: Just off Cannon Street
Transport Links: Take the tube to St Paul's Underground station on the Central Line. Blackfriars and Cannon Street mainline stations are also close.
Admission: Adults - £6, children - £3. The London Pass can save you the cost of admission to St Paul's.
Opening hours: Monday to Saturday from 8.30am, last admission for sightseeing 4pm. Always check before you go, because the Cathedral is sometimes closed for special services.

      Royal Wedding Inspired Ideas

The wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton has put the world into royal wedding frenzy. Many a bride-to-be has found herself taken with the idea for feeling like a royal bride on her wedding day. While we can't all marry a prince, anyone can have a regal wedding with these royal wedding inspired ideas.

Set the tone for your wedding with a grand motif. An embossed golden crown is a stunning motif with a decidedly royal flavor. Use it on the wedding invitations, on custom cocktail napkins, on the programs, and even the favors. The regal crown will definitely give your wedding a royal feeling. Another great regal motif is the fleur-de-lis. It feels just as grand and royal as a crown motif, but can be a bit more understated. For a more subtle royal motif, consider golden bees, which were a sign of the French royalty.

Rich colors are an excellent way to give your wedding that royal feeling. Deep purple is the ultimate royal color, and can be used throughout your wedding in everything from the bridesmaid dresses to the flowers to custom sets of bridal jewelry. If purple is not your style, consider a rich burgundy color to impart a regal feeling to your wedding. Last but not least, do not overlook the possibility of navy. When paired with golden crown or fleur-de-lis motifs, navy will absolutely be elegant and royal.

Every princess bride needs a spectacular wedding gown! True royal brides tend to select styles which are more traditional than trendy. Sumptuous silk satin or silk taffeta, fine lace, and metallic embroidery are among the details to look for in a bridal gown fit for a princess. Cap sleeves, full skirts, and long trains are other regal features to seek in royal inspired wedding gowns. A princess should always look like a lady, so avoid dresses which are too tight or revealing. A small tiara and a veil will enhance your regal style. Perfect finishing touches such as sparkling couture bridal jewelry sets will complete the grand effect.

At the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, there will be a fanfare band. If you really want to have the feeling of a royal wedding at your own nuptials, why not hire your own regal trumpeters? They can stand in the back of the church and announce the arrival of the bride as the doors open and the "Wedding March" begins. Small boys dressed as pages can roll out an aisle runner to further enhance the grandeur of the bridal processional. A royal wedding tends to have a big bridal party, so feel free to invite all of your little nieces and nephews to be in your ceremony, along with the usual contingent of bridesmaids and groomsmen.

A final royal inspired wedding idea is a grand wedding cake. Choose a towering confection with at least five tiers for the regal effect (use Styrofoam as faux layers if you do not really need that much cake). Traditional white or ivory royal icing over a rich fruitcake is the traditional dessert for British royalty. Ornate white and gold decorations like swags, crowns, or fleurs-des-lis are the perfect adornments for such a grand cake. Many royal grooms have historically been in the armed services; if your groom happens to be in the military, you may wish to use his ceremonial sword to cut the wedding cake (check with his branch of the service about the regulations). A grand wedding cake is the perfect ending to a royal inspired wedding that will make you truly feel like a princess for a day.
